We are delighted to announce the inaugural GamesFest Short Story Competition to coincide with this year’s festival in Tring on 21st October, 2017. 

The competition will be run in conjunction with Tring Writers Circle and is free to enter. It is open to all ages and there are three categories:- Up to 10 years, 11 to 16 years and 17+. 

Closing date for entries: 28th September 2017

The shortlist will be announced on the GamesFest Website by 18:00 on 16th October, 2017. 

Excerpts from the three winning entries will be read out at the festival and we would ask all entrants to ensure they will be available to attend the festival should they be shortlisted. All finalists will receive free entry to GamesFest.

The winners will be announced at GamesFest on 21st October, 2017 and will be available on the GamesFest website on 22nd October, 2017.

Competition Rules:

Entries:
All entries must be typed in 12pt black font.
Entries should have a 3cm margin down each side.
Stories should be double line spaced.
The story title and page number should appear at the bottom of every page.
All stories should have a cover sheet including the story title, word count, age category, genre and author’s name.
Stories should be formatted in Word. No other format will be accepted.

Three entries will be shortlisted in each age category.
All entries must be submitted by midnight on Thursday 28th September, 2017. No entries will be accepted after that time.
There is no entrance fee.
We can accept only one story per entrant.
Themes:
Entries should be in one of the following genres: Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Crossover stories will be accepted.
Stories should not contain any gratuitous violence, bad language or themes of a sexual nature.
Categories & Word Length (excluding cover sheet):  
Children up to 10 years of age – 750 words maximum.
Children between 11 and 16 – 1,000 words maximum.
Adults aged 17 and over – 1,500 words maximum.
Judges:
This year’s judges will be: Jonathan Green, Erika Sanderson-Cline, LL McNeil and
Michael R Miller. 
The judges’ decision is final.
Prizes:
All finalists will receive free entrance to GamesFest on 21st October, 2017.
The three winning entries will receive a book token, signed copies of books by the judges and one-on-one chats with the celebrity authors. The three winning stories will be recorded by Erika Sanderson-Cline as an audiobook and will also be published on the Gamesfest Website.

Terms and Conditions:

Entries must be submitted in English. Translations of short stories originally published in languages other than English will not be accepted.
All entries should be submitted by email.
No more than one story can be submitted by each entrant.
The winning stories will win a book token, signed copies of books by the judges and one-on-one chats with the celebrity authors. There will be no cash substitute.
The closing date is midnight on Thursday 28th September, 2017.
Stories must be entirely the work of the entrant and must not have been previously published, self-published or published on any website or public online forum or broadcast.
Copyright will remain with the author but stories are submitted on the understanding that GamesFest has the right to copy, distribute and publish the story until 30th September 2018 to support the festival.
GamesFest is unable to offer individual feedback to entrants.
The decision of the judges is final. No further correspondence will be entered into.
Shortlisted entrants should be available to attend GamesFest on 21st October, 2017.
Submission of an entry is taken as acceptance of these terms and conditions.
